Life of a Chinese Oak Silkworm

First Instar - Black
...Second Instar - pale green
......Third Instar - spines of a cactus
.........Fourth Instar - dark green
. .... .. ..Fifth Instar - Chunky

The caterpillar has begun spinning
sending the yarn in a whirligig
around the spindle of its body
soon crippled in a cocoon
of its own making

Behind the scenes it now has
antennae and wings

With a butterfly stroke
into the air
it just crossed the threshold
from the stairwell
of stages of growth
into a tiny Anteros
